Technology is a vast and diverse field, encompassing many disciplines. Some people use the term primarily for gadgets, such as cell phones, tablets, HiFi’s, or cars; others think of it more broadly, including things like computer software and systems, the internet, robots, and virtual reality. SNHU’s School of Applied Technology offers a wide variety of programs that teach students how to work with the latest technologies in fields such as computer science, information security, software engineering, and systems analysis and integration. Students can choose to earn a bachelor’s degree for a solid foundation in the field, or go on to pursue a master’s for more advanced understanding and a higher salary.
During the 1900s, scientists discovered how to fit the parts that make electronic devices work onto small chips called integrated circuits. This allowed them to create smaller, more portable devices such as computers, DVD players, and digital cameras. They also developed electrical devices to help people with disabilities, such as hearing aids and kidney dialysis machines that operate from outside the body, or pacemakers that keep hearts beating regularly.
While technology can bring great benefits to human lives, it can also have negative effects. In addition to causing environmental damage, it can disrupt social hierarchies and cause harm to individuals. Some technology can even be manipulated by humans for evil purposes. Despite these risks, people continue to develop and utilize technology to enhance their lives and advance society.
Some technologies are so complex that they require large organizations to design, build, and maintain them. For example, industrial and manufacturing technologies produce more efficient, simpler, and safer machines, engines, tools, products, hardware parts, and other products. These technologies often incorporate automation and data analysis, which reduces manual labor and increases productivity.
Other technologies are easier to use and benefit all types of people. For example, mobile phones allow people to stay in touch with one another regardless of their geographical location. In addition, computers and the internet enable people to access and share knowledge, research, and news instantly. These technologies are widely used in education, enabling teachers and students to communicate with each other easily.
Some people argue that a technological approach to learning is more effective than a traditional approach. This type of technology uses games, simulations, and other interactive activities to engage students and help them retain knowledge. It is often used in conjunction with other educational methods, such as lectures, to help students understand difficult concepts. Many of these teaching techniques are also used in business, helping companies achieve their goals and increase profits.
