How to Know If a Relationship is Healthy

When we hear the word relationship, it’s easy to think of romantic partnerships or close friendships. But the term encompasses so many different kinds of human connections, some of which are very casual. Then there are relationships that involve more long-term commitments. And of course, there are also the family relationships that help us feel connected to those who matter most to us. It’s important to know some tell-tale signs that a relationship is healthy and headed for the long haul, says registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RP.

One way to determine whether a relationship is healthy is to see if there’s balance between giving and taking. This might include the amount of affection, energy, and support that’s given and received, as well as the quality and depth of communication. In a healthy relationship, the balance will be even and both people will feel satisfied.

Another sign that a relationship is healthy is if both people understand each other’s core values and beliefs and can discuss these without anger or defensiveness. This can also refer to shared interests and goals, such as a common purpose for the future or a sense of belonging to something larger than yourself.

Healthy relationships can also provide a sense of fulfillment and meaning in life by giving you someone to lean on when you’re struggling. They can also enable you to take greater risks and pursue your dreams because you’ll have a support system behind you no matter what happens.

Having supportive friends and family can also make it easier to talk about mental health issues, like anxiety or depression. And they can help you find new ways to problem-solve when things get difficult.

But it’s also important to remember that not all relationships are created equal, and some can be toxic. It’s important to stay aware of the kinds of relationships you’re in, and to seek help if you’re in an unhealthy one. That might mean working with a therapist together, or even seeing one on your own, if you’re having a hard time coping with the relationship. It might also mean ending the relationship altogether if it’s bad for your mental health.
